Google has announced an extension of software update support for the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold, increasing their OS update commitment from three years to five years. The update comes as part of Google’s broader strategy to improve the software situation for Android devices. In recent years, brands like Google and Samsung have begun promising longer support periods, with some devices now eligible for up to seven years of updates. This extended support not only includes OS upgrades but also security patches, which are vital for user protection. Specifically, users of the Pixel 6, which launched in 2021, can expect support until 2026, while the Pixel 7 and Fold users, released in 2023, will receive updates until 2028.
Google’s recent adjustments to its software support timeline were quietly made public on its support page, marking a significant change for older models that previously did not qualify for extended support. According to Google, “these phones, including Pixel Fold, will get updates for 5 years starting from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the U.S.” This announcement retroactively alters the update schedule for affected devices, ensuring they benefit from five years of security updates and OS enhancements, alongside features introduced through Pixel Drops.
The release timeline for Android 16 is also due for a shift, with plans indicating that the next version could drop by Q2 2025, marking a departure from the traditional fall launch schedule. The Developer Preview of Android 16 is already available, allowing users to test the upcoming features ahead of the official release.
