Samsung has launched a new division called RX, or Robotics eXperience, to oversee its robotics projects. Dongkun Lee, who joined the company in May as Executive Vice President, will lead the strategy for RX. Lee previously led Hyundai’s robotics strategy, which included Boston Dynamics.
RX will operate from Samsung’s facilities in Seoul, South Korea, while the company plans to establish robotics research hubs in the United States, China, and Japan to leverage local expertise. TM Roh, Samsung’s CEO, will supervise the division.
The creation of RX indicates Samsung’s commitment to advancing physical AI technology, joining other tech firms in this area. Hyundai recently acquired the remaining shares of Boston Dynamics to enhance its robotics capabilities.
According to Korea JoongAng Daily, Samsung aims to commence manufacturing humanoid robots in 2023. TM Roh announced an investment of 19 trillion Korean won ($13 billion) to develop manufacturing facilities for humanoid robots at its Gumi location in Korea.
