Kobo plans to integrate its ereaders and reading apps with StoryGraph, a social reading platform, in June. This integration will automatically sync reading progress with connected StoryGraph accounts.

StoryGraph is an independent alternative to Goodreads that offers users more control over their recommendations and operates outside of Amazon’s ecosystem. Rakuten Kobo CEO Michael Tamblyn expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “For a lot of us, the best part of reading is the community. It’s a part of how we show up in the world as readers every day.” He added that the integration aims to eliminate the friction between finishing a chapter and tracking progress.

The integration will enable Kobo ereaders and reading apps to update book progress percentages, add currently reading titles to StoryGraph’s In Progress shelf, and mark completed books as “Read.” It will also include audiobooks listened to on Kobo’s platform.

This collaboration is seen as a strategic effort against Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem, focusing on enhancing user control. Kobo offers additional integrations, including Instapaper for reading saved web articles and access to files from cloud storage providers like Dropbox and Google Drive.
