A bug in Discord’s moderation tools led to erroneous account bans beginning in May 2026, as reported by the company’s support team on X on July 7, 2026. Approximately 200 accounts were improperly banned over one recent weekend, while the issue may have impacted around 8,200 accounts since its onset.

The bug involved the misclassification of posts containing square grid images, which were mistakenly flagged as child sexual abuse material. This resulted in bans for a range of innocuous content, including spreadsheets, chessboards, and gaming inventory menus.

Discord acknowledged the severity of the issue, stating, “We know that’s not a satisfying explanation if this was your account, and we should have caught this sooner.” The company is working on enhancing safeguards to prevent similar issues in the future. Discord’s support team noted that their AI-driven moderation tools have been known to generate false positives.

Typically, flagged accounts undergo human review by the Trust & Safety team before any sanctions are applied. The intended protocol involved temporarily pausing uploads during the review period, rather than banning the user. However, the bug caused accounts to be improperly banned, and also prevented automatic reinstatement after a successful review.

Discord called the incident “an embarrassing mistake” that persisted for roughly two months. The company confirmed that accounts erroneously banned as a result of this bug should now be reinstated.
