Microsoft announced the formation of a new operating business named Microsoft Frontier Company, aimed at facilitating enterprise AI deployments using its existing AI tools. The new initiative will receive a $2.5 billion investment and will involve 6,000 industry and engineering experts.

Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft’s Commercial Business, stated that this venture transcends the traditional concept of Forward-Deployed Engineering (FDE). “This goes beyond what has been labeled as Forward-Deployed Engineering,” Althoff wrote, “and will be the largest, most capable, outcome-driven engineering organization in the industry.”

The Microsoft Frontier Company shares similarities with several FDE-based AI projects revealed recently. Just two days ago, Amazon Web Services announced a $1 billion internal commitment for its own AI deployment, aligning with the FDE model. Additionally, both OpenAI and Anthropic have initiated joint ventures related to AI deployments, which also include private equity funding.

Microsoft’s established client base, which includes deployments for much of the Fortune 500, is expected to provide a competitive advantage for the new initiative. The announcement also noted early partnerships with the London Stock Exchange Group, Unilever, Land O’Lakes, and Accenture.
