GitHub announced it will allow developers to order a burned CD of their public GitHub repository, following PlayStation’s confirmation that it will discontinue physical game discs. The announcement was made via a post on X, linking to a Microsoft Forms page for collecting shipping details.

The GitHub offer, branded as “physically yours, forever,” is designed as a humorous response to Sony’s decision. GitHub’s post claims, “In light of recent developments in physical media, GitHub is proud to announce that you can now obtain your public repo on CD-ROM. Keep it. Lend it to friends. Pass it on to your children.” The linked form requests a GitHub username, public repo URL, shipping address, and phone number.

The promotion is real but limited to the first 1,000 eligible submissions. Each individual can only request one CD. The offer is active from July 2 to July 6, 2026, with shipping anticipated to take a few weeks. Availability may vary based on the recipient’s location. GitHub stated that the shipping details collected will only be used for this purpose and will be deleted after mailing.

Users must provide eight pieces of information to complete the form, including confirmation of ownership of the repository. The offer is reminiscent of similar jokes made by companies like Domino’s UK and KFC Spain regarding “digital only” products.

GitHub’s post received over a million views quickly, eliciting mixed reactions. Some users found it amusing, while others criticized it, suggesting it serves as a distraction from ongoing reliability issues. GitHub logged 257 incidents between May 2025 and April 2026, with 48 classified as major outages.

Developer Robert Hurst labeled the promotion as poor public relations, considering GitHub’s recent service issues. Meanwhile, others expressed nostalgia for physical media, humorously recalling past formats. The CD advertisement contrasts with the trend toward cloud storage, especially against the backdrop of significant investments in AI infrastructure by major tech firms.

Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta are projected to spend nearly $700 billion on AI this year, causing some to question the practicality of a physical media giveaway. AI activity on GitHub is reported to exert 30 times the load of human developers, contributing to scaling challenges for the platform.

The CD offer, while perceived as a lighthearted joke, encapsulates a deeper irony regarding physical media’s ongoing relevance amid the rapid shift toward digital solutions.
