SpaceX is reportedly testing a handheld AI device, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The device is claimed to provide access to xAI’s models without requiring a smartphone.

SpaceX demonstrated the device to investors ahead of its initial public offering. The report describes the device as slimmer than an iPhone and powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. It allegedly runs on a proprietary operating system and integrates services from xAI, including the AI assistant Grok.

The purpose of the device and whether SpaceX intends to sell it remains unclear. The report highlights that using Grok through existing platforms presents disadvantages, such as sharing subscription revenue with Apple for sales made through the iPhone.

According to the Wall Street Journal, SpaceX appears motivated to create its own hardware to avoid restrictions imposed by app store rules. In July 2025, SpaceX partnered with T-Mobile to provide access to Starlink’s satellite network on smartphones.

However, Elon Musk has previously expressed skepticism regarding the development of a mobile device. In response to the Wall Street Journal’s report, Musk stated it was “utterly false.” His comments followed shortly after the publication of the article.

The context suggests that any new product associated with Musk should be approached cautiously, as it may have been presented primarily to attract investor interest.
