Google has announced additional details about Android Halo, a forthcoming feature for AI agents like Gemini, which will be integrated into the status bar of Android devices. This feature enables AI agents to communicate with users while operating in the background, providing updates, asking questions, and presenting results without forcing users to switch to an AI application.
During a discussion with Logan Kilpatrick, Product Lead for Google AI Studio, Sameer Samat, President of Android at Google, explained the functionality of Android Halo. “It’s a dedicated location in the status bar where your agent of choice, Gemini or other agents, can actually update you and get input from you on the task or tasks you have in your queue,” Samat said. He added that as AI agents become capable of handling more tasks autonomously, they will occasionally require user engagement for follow-up questions, progress updates, or completed results.
This feature was initially introduced at Google I/O in May, though specifics on its operation were limited at that time. A short demonstration clip showed a subtle status indicator that appears at the top of the screen when Gemini is active, aiming to keep users informed about their AI assistant’s activities without disrupting their ongoing tasks on the device.
Samat indicated that further capabilities of Android Halo powered by Gemini Intelligence are expected, but those details have not yet been released. He characterized the shift in Android as a move from being a traditional operating system to an intelligent system that understands user inputs and context.
He also described a virtual window system designed for AI agents, where tasks will run in isolated, containerized environments within the status bar. The AI agent, such as Gemini, is confined to this designated container and cannot access other applications. In another part of the interview, Samat showcased a Gemini feature that enables the AI assistant to utilize a car’s front-facing camera to answer questions about the surroundings.
