Adobe has announced the shutdown of its 2D animation software, Adobe Animate, as the company shifts focus toward AI-integrated products. The company updated its support site on Monday and emailed existing customers, stating that Animate will be discontinued on March 1, 2026.
Enterprise customers will receive technical support through March 1, 2029, to facilitate the transition. Other customers will have support available through March of next year.
The decision has sparked reactions of incredulity, disappointment, and anger from users concerned about lacking direct alternatives. One customer posted on X pleading for Adobe to open source the software. Commenters replied with comments such as “this is legit gonna ruin my life” and “literally what the hell are they doing? animate is the reason a good chunk of adobe users even subscribe in the first place.”
In an FAQ, Adobe explained: “Animate has been a product that has existed for over 25 years and has served its purpose well for creating, nurturing, and developing the animation ecosystem. As technologies evolve, new platforms and paradigms emerge that better serve the needs of the users. Acknowledging this change, we are planning to discontinue supporting Animate.”
Adobe offers no single replacement for Animate. Customers with a Creative Cloud Pro plan can use Adobe After Effects for complex keyframe animation via its Puppet tool. Adobe Express provides animation effects for photos, videos, text, shapes, and other design elements.
Prior signs included Animate’s absence from Adobe’s annual Max conference and the lack of a 2025 version release. The software will continue to function for users who have it downloaded.
Adobe charged $34.49 per month for Animate, with pricing at $22.99 per month under a 12-month commitment or $263.88 for an annual prepaid plan.
