Since Elon Musk gained control of Twitter, users are moving to other platforms. That’s why we decided to compare alternatives, Hive vs Mastodon, which one’s better?

And despite the fact that users are fleeing Twitter like rats from a sinking ship, users are still searching for an alternative due to the app’s core values. Although many names have been proposed, Hive Social and Mastodon have proven to be the most popular ones.

Hive vs Mastodon: Let’s get to know them

Here is a brief summary of each app in case you have never heard of them before.

What is Mastodon?

Mastodon is a community-owned, open-source, and decentralized social network. Essentially, this means that it is unrelated to a bigger organization and is free of advertising and other revenue-generating activities. As a result, there are no algorithms. Your feed is chronological, and nothing is being concealed behind screens that only display the content you think you want to see.

Mastodon’s utilization of servers is a little bit different from both Twitter and Hive Social. You’ll be prompted to join a server of anything you’re interested in when you register an account. There is a ton there, so you aren’t limited, and it means that you are sharing a virtual social environment with others who share your interests. You should choose the server that most interests you because one account can only belong to one.

You can choose to opt-out of search engine indexing, approve followers, and set up automated post deletion in the application.

It is extremely similar to Twitter in other respects. The character limit is 500 and you toot rather than tweet. You also have the ability to share or like some other user’s “toot.”

Who owns Mastodon?

Eugen Rochko, the creator of Mastodon, traveled to Germany when he was 11 years old and enrolled at the University of Jena to study computer science. He started developing open-source networking software while he was a student, and in 2016 he released the beta version of Mastodon.

Soon after finishing his studies in early 2016, the platform went live, and he started working on it full-time.

Within six months, there were 1,000 instances—independent servers—on the website. The federated social network platform had “hundreds of thousands of users” at this point, but growth after that was challenging.

Together with hundreds of unpaid GitHub volunteers, he started constructing the platform with money from Patreon, OpenCollective, and a minor grant from the European Commission.

What is Hive Social?

Hive, which is only a few years old, has become wildly popular since Twitter’s demise. The app is the one that most closely mimics Twitter out of the two. You may submit text and photographs, follow accounts you’re interested in, and there’s even a website to see what’s trending. Even the profile design resembles Twitter remarkably well.

There is a feature of Hive Social that may particularly appeal to you if you’re an oldie and recall My Space. As followers read your tweets, you can add a song for them to listen to on their profile. We think that’s a very cool feature.

The lack of a desktop version of Hive Social is one of its drawbacks. Given the recent surge in usage of mobile-only software, it might not be long before it is optimized for laptops and desktop PCs as well.

Who owns Hive Social?

Hive Social’s founder, 24-year-old Raluca Pop, told Insider that the app has 2 million downloads and that the rate of those downloads is growing.

“We’ve really created and maintained a safe and healthy community. If you get on the app, it just feels really pleasant and relaxed,” she stated.

Hive Social was created by Pop, who also goes by the name Kassandra, in high school, and it debuted in 2019. Up until Friday, when a third developer joined the team, she was the lone employee of the social media app and a self-taught coder.

Hive vs Mastodon: Which one’s better?

When we make a Hive vs Mastodon comparison, and this is just a subjective opinion, Hive Social is a better Twitter alternative simply because it resembles Twitter without all of its current problems. You are not limited to a single hobby; you can still stay current with world events, and, to be really honest, the UI is just more engaging. Additionally, we are totally convinced about the music feature.

In recent weeks, it has attracted a significant number of new users, many of whom have stuck around and spread the news about it. Hive Social is the greatest option for the ordinary Twitter user. However, Mastodon has certain advantages as well.

Hive Social’s guidelines are rather specific as well. Nothing is NSFW (Not Safe For Work), and such things as bullying, hate speech, and more are strictly prohibited. If you want to learn more about these social media platforms don’t forget to check out our Mastodon vs Twitter comparison!
