The US government is urging Meta to submit its AI models for evaluation due to safety and security concerns regarding AI technologies. The New York Times reports that Meta is the only major AI developer that has not voluntarily shared its models for review, prompting the government to assess Meta’s capabilities and identify vulnerabilities.
OpenAI and Anthropic are collaborating with the government to test unreleased AI models, while Google, xAI, and Microsoft have agreed to provide the Center for AI Standards and Innovation with early access to their new models. The Center, created by the Biden administration and led by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, is staffed with experts to vet AI technology.
Meta spokesperson Francis Brennan stated, “We share the [Trump] administration’s goal of advancing US leadership on robust and secure frontier AI. While we are working through the details, we hope to sign the agreement soon.” Reports indicate the government has been sending requests to Meta via emails.
President Trump signed an executive order on June 2 to establish a framework for the federal government to evaluate AI releases. Under this order, the government must develop a review process by the end of July. Companies are expected to grant authorities up to 30 days to evaluate their technologies before public release. Other firms, except for Meta, have been sharing their models with the government informally for months in advance of this official review process.
Meta launched its latest model, Muse Spark, in April. This model features “Instant” and “Thinking” modes, with the latter providing reasoning capabilities that require additional time to generate comprehensive answers. The government has increased scrutiny of the AI sector in light of a security directive issued in mid-June.
In mid-June, the government ordered Anthropic to suspend access to its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models for all foreign nationals due to national security concerns. Anthropic blocked access to these models to ensure compliance with the government’s directive. Mythos is Anthropic’s advanced cybersecurity AI model, with Mythos 5 being the latest version. Fable 5 was designed to offer many capabilities of Mythos to the public but is not as powerful as its exclusive counterpart.
