Threads announced an expansion of its trending topic summaries within the Explore section of the app, providing AI-generated summaries of main discussion topics among users. The feature, which originally launched in the U.S. in February 2024, is now available in Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Brazil as of today.
Threads Chief Connor Hayes stated, “Threads is where you go to talk about what’s happening around the world — and Trending helps you find those conversations. We’ve been rolling it out to more countries, and it’s now live in Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Brazil.”
The trending topic summaries are determined by AI, based on user engagement within the app. The Threads team implements human oversight to avoid topics that violate community guidelines, aiming to reflect key conversations and encourage real-time discussions. The app refers to these summaries as “timely topics” to manage user expectations.
Real-time engagement is a competitive focus for Threads as it positions itself against X, which currently boasts 600 million monthly active users (MAU). In comparison, Threads has reached 400 million MAU and is gaining momentum in several key discussion areas.
With this expansion of trending topics, Threads aims to enhance user engagement and foster more real-time conversations among users, potentially increasing its foothold in the social media landscape focused on topical discussions.
