WhatsApp is testing a new paid subscription service, ‘WhatsApp Plus,’ which has now launched in the Android beta for select users. The subscription is priced at approximately $2.99 per month, with reports of a European user seeing a charge of €2.49 monthly.
Meta aims to generate subscription revenue from its extensive user base, including WhatsApp. Earlier this year, it indicated plans to introduce paid tiers for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, with Instagram’s paid tier undergoing testing last month before the rollout of WhatsApp Plus.
According to WABetaInfo, the premium features available in the WhatsApp Plus subscription include sending premium stickers, changing the app’s theme, choosing a custom app icon, pinning extra chats, accessing premium ringtones, and upgrading chat lists. This rollout remains in a testing phase, with expectations for a broader launch on iOS, Mac, and other platforms.
Currently, no official release date has been disclosed. The recent launch provides insight into WhatsApp’s plans for a subscription service aimed at diversifying its revenue streams.
