AWS launched Agent Registry, a centralized platform for managing AI agents, available in preview through the AWS Bedrock AgentCore console across five compute regions.

The platform aims to address challenges related to governance and transparency as enterprises increasingly deploy AI agents within their workflows. AWS has identified issues such as lack of visibility, weak governance, and tool duplication as key concerns for Chief Information Officers (CIOs) managing AI sprawl.

Agent Registry functions as a structured, searchable database, storing data on agents, tools, and custom resources. Each entry will include essential features like ownership, protocols, capabilities, and invocation methods. A hybrid search function enables users to find resources using specific keywords and natural language phrases.

AWS stated, “Discovery becomes the path of least resistance,” highlighting that teams can easily search for existing solutions before committing resources to create new ones.

Other vendors are also advancing in AI management. OpenAI launched its enterprise-focused platform, Frontier, for AI agent management, with AWS as its exclusive cloud distributor. Anthropic recently introduced its Claude Managed Agents, providing a pre-built infrastructure designed to simplify the development and oversight of autonomous systems.

Agent sprawl has emerged as a pressing concern for CIOs, with the rapid development of AI tools outpacing management capabilities. Gartner Director Analyst Autumn Stanish noted that AI agents are becoming a significant disruptive force in IT operations.

AWS’ Agent Registry reflects a broader trend among CIOs, who are transitioning from experimental approaches to more structured governance and scaling strategies for AI deployments.
