Over 500 million Windows 10 PC owners cannot upgrade to Windows 11 and face increased security risks following Microsoft’s end of support for Windows 10. Google announced a free upgrade to ChromeOS Flex for these users, allowing them to convert their old PCs into modern, secure devices. The new offering includes a $3 reusable USB Kit to facilitate installations, available through a partnership with Back Market.
This move addresses the growing concern over outdated hardware and security vulnerabilities. Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 in October 2022, leaving many users with obsolete systems. While Microsoft offers a free extended support update program until October 2023, users must transition to an alternative soon to maintain security.
The ChromeOS Flex upgrade is aimed at reducing e-waste and promoting sustainability, as Google emphasizes the need to prolong the life of existing devices. “The manufacturing process of a new laptop is responsible for a large part of its carbon footprint,” Google stated. “ChromeOS Flex allows the already-manufactured device to be used for longer, keeping hardware out of landfills.”
Compared to other operating systems, ChromeOS consumes 19% less energy on average. The initiative shows a commitment to environmental sustainability in technology by minimizing the emissions tied to producing new devices.
The move from Windows to ChromeOS is controversial, especially for users whose PCs cannot run Windows 11. While Microsoft has begun force-upgrading PCs to newer versions of Windows 11 using AI, no automatic upgrade process for eligible Windows 10 machines has been initiated. This status may change after the conclusion of extended support in October 2023.
“You can transform your aging, unsupported laptop into a fast, secure, and sustainable machine for free,” Google said, highlighting the benefits of upgrading to ChromeOS Flex. The USB Kit required for installation is priced at approximately $3 or €3.
