OpenAI has launched a $230 light-up keyboard, the Codex Micro, designed to function with its AI coding assistant, Codex. This device, co-designed with keyboard maker Work Louder, features light-up “Agent Keys” indicating agent status and customizable Command Keys for frequent Codex commands.

The Codex Micro includes a joystick for launching workflows and a dial to adjust the agent’s reasoning level, which determines the time and computing power used for tasks. OpenAI stated that the Micro serves as a “command center for agentic work,” aiming to provide control over AI agents without relying on a phone or desktop app.

OpenAI classified the Codex Micro as a limited-run collaboration, suggesting it is intended more as a novelty item than for mainstream use. The company described it as a flashy introduction to the hardware market.

In addition to the Codex Micro, OpenAI is reportedly developing a portable, screenless smart speaker that integrates with ChatGPT. This speaker will feature mechanical elements capable of independent movement. Specific details on this device are still unclear, and it is in the development phase, subject to change.

Former Apple engineers are tasked with designing this new device. Apple is currently suing OpenAI for alleged trade theft, claiming that OpenAI leaders extracted confidential information to develop their hardware. OpenAI has denied these allegations.
