Apple is exploring a second foldable iPhone that could adopt a square, clamshell-style design. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman states the company is considering a “square, clamshell‑style foldable phone,” but emphasizes it is “far from guaranteed to reach the market” and remains only “under consideration.”
Such a device would position Apple to compete directly with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Motorola’s Razr foldable. Gurman’s report indicates Apple’s optimism about its first foldable iPhone, rumored for release later this year, prompting preparations for follow-up models to meet potential demand.
This is not the first mention of a clamshell iPhone. A prior report from The Information disclosed that Apple had developed prototypes in this form factor.
Gurman’s Power On newsletter also notes Apple’s interest in a larger foldable that opens like a book. Separately, he previously reported Apple’s exploration of an iPad-sized foldable, though development challenges could push any launch to 2029.
