Reddit is exploring methods to verify user identity to combat bots on its platform, the company’s CEO Steve Huffman said.
The potential implementation of identity verification aims to address a rise in automated accounts and fake content, impacting user experience and platform integrity.
Huffman mentioned several verification approaches, including lightweight options like Face ID or Touch ID, which require a human presence. He stated these methods prove a person is present.
Other considerations include relying on third-party services that are decentralized or do not require specific identification. More stringent options, such as ID-checking services, are also being weighed.
Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian commented on X that while he did not expect Face ID requirements, action against bot-generated content is necessary. He expressed concerns about user acceptance of face-scanning verification.
Huffman emphasized the company’s intent to prioritize user anonymity while confirming human presence. He described the process as an evolution to find a balance between verification and anonymity.
Bots have increasingly affected social media platforms, including Reddit, where they have been utilized for various activities, including secret experiments.
