Sony PlayStation Studios has acquired Bluepoint Games

Sony's PlayStation Studios announced that it has acquired Bluepoint Games, it is the gaming studio behind Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls remakes.

Sony’s PlayStation Studios announced Thursday that it has acquired Bluepoint Games, the creators of the Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls remakes, and has assigned them to work on an original project. Marco Thrush, BluePoint Games CEO, commented on the deal: “We can’t talk about what this is, but that’s the next step in the evolution for us.”

Which games have BluePoint Games released so far?

Bluepoint’s game catalog includes many remasters, they were the studio behind God of War Collection on PS3. They worked on Metal Gear Solid HD Collection in 2011 and Titanfall for Xbox 360 in 2014. Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, which is a PS-exclusive series, was also brought us by this gaming studio. Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls remakes were also iconic releases for Bluepoint Games. According to a news release from Sony Interactive Entertainment, Demon’s Souls has sold more than 1.4 million copies as of September 19th.

“PlayStation has such an iconic gaming catalog and for us there’s been nothing better than to bring some of gaming’s masterpieces to new players. Becoming a part of PlayStation Studios empowers our team to raise the quality bar even further and create even more impactful experiences for the PlayStation community,” says Thrush.

This is Sony’s fifth acquisition in the last six months

This deal is the fifth high-profile acquisition of the Japanese company in the previous six months. In March, the firm acquired the Evolution Championship Series and formed a partnership to run its events. Then, Sony Interactive Entertainment acquired Returnal and Resogun creator Housemarque at the end of June. Next, PS Studios bought Nixxes Software which is a developer specializing in PC ports. Then the company also signed a deal to acquire Firesprite gaming studio.

Microsoft has not acquired any gaming studio since they joined forces with ZeniMax Media.

The Japanese company has been on a buying spree in order to expand its gaming presence. Whereas, the biggest rival of the firm, Microsoft, has not acquired any gaming studio since they joined forces with ZeniMax Media in March with a $7.5 million deal. ZeniMax is the parent company of Bethesda, which has produced such hits as “The Elder Scrolls” and “Fallout.”

Sony has made a record $2.57 billion profit in the first quarter of the year thanks to the PS5 launch. The company has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide since November 2020.
