OpenAI plans to launch its first hardware product, an AI-powered speaker, designed to assist users in various tasks like providing cooking instructions. According to a Bloomberg report, the speaker will be rechargeable, portable, and function as a “humanlike AI companion” capable of natural conversation, similar to ChatGPT. It is intended to control smart home devices and play audio.
The device will not feature a screen but will include mechanical elements intended to create the illusion of being “alive.” OpenAI will utilize a more advanced version of GPT-Live, the model behind ChatGPT’s new voice mode, allowing the speaker to listen and talk simultaneously while adapting quickly during conversations.
The speaker will also be equipped with a camera and sensors to gather contextual information, enabling more personalized interactions. OpenAI acquired the startup io, founded by ex-Apple designer Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion in 2025 to assist in the speaker’s design.
The release is scheduled for 2027, though it may face delays. Apple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and two former employees, alleging trade secret theft and seeking an injunction against OpenAI’s hardware products. The lawsuit claims former employees Chang Liu and Tang Yew Tan downloaded confidential hardware-related files.
Apple also accused OpenAI of altering its hiring practices to solicit confidential information from the company. OpenAI has employed over 400 former Apple employees, including Paul Meade, who now heads OpenAI’s hardware division.
