OpenAI announced today that it is making ChatGPT Health available to all U.S.-based users over 18 across all plans. This announcement follows a lawsuit from a Florida-based pastor, who claimed the service provided a near-fatal suggestion to avoid consulting a doctor.
The company initiated testing of the health feature through a dedicated hub in January 2023, enabling users to integrate data from health services like Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal. During the testing phase, OpenAI reported that users were making 230 million health-related queries each week, a figure that has now risen to 300 million.
Users can integrate medical records from hospital systems such as Epic and Oracle Health, in addition to health platforms like One Medical and Function Health. Previously, health-related queries necessitated the use of the health hub, but now users can access their health information in all queries. OpenAI noted that during testing, 70% of health-related queries occurred outside the dedicated hub, allowing for broader integration of health data in general chat.
The company highlighted improvements in the accuracy of health-related responses, stating that the newer model, GPT 5.6-Luna, outperformed GPT 5.5 on HealthBench evaluation, which tests large language models on health queries. OpenAI emphasized that it does not utilize user data to train its models, collaborating instead with physicians to enhance the performance of health-related queries.
Despite these advancements, OpenAI clarified that its services are “not intended for use in the diagnosis or treatment of any health condition,” a statement made in response to legal concerns raised by the lawsuit. The company is actively working to ensure that health-related answers are safer and encourages users to seek professional medical advice when making health decisions.
Research has indicated that AI bots are not a reliable source for medical advice. Nevertheless, companies like Anthropic and Google continue to introduce health-related AI features. The health functionality in ChatGPT is being rolled out this week to U.S. users with free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans on the web and iOS platforms.
