Anthropic has updated its voice mode for Claude, enabling users to utilize its Sonnet and Opus models alongside Haiku for improved performance on complex requests. Previously, voice queries were processed through Haiku, limiting functionality for intricate questions. This update aims to enhance user experience by allowing more robust interaction capabilities.
The voice mode now defaults to the last system used for text chat, provided users have paid for access to Claude. Additionally, users can easily switch between Haiku, Sonnet, or Opus during a conversation using a model picker. “Voice mode uses the fastest version of whichever model you’ve selected, so the conversation runs smoothly,” Anthropic stated.
New features include the capability to pull context from connected applications, such as Gmail and Slack, when permission is granted. This integration adds versatility to the voice mode by allowing a more informed dialogue based on external data.
An Anthropic spokesperson explained that the voice mode operates on a turn-based architecture, meaning Claude pauses to think before responding. This method contrasts with OpenAI’s fully duplex GPT-Live system, which allows simultaneous speech processing. Consequently, users may find interactions with Claude feel less fluid than those with ChatGPT.
The new voice mode does not automatically detect language changes, requiring users to indicate a switch either verbally or through the settings menu. However, support for several new languages, including Indonesian, has been added to the voice functionalities.
Anthropic emphasized that this update is part of an ongoing investment in voice technology, stating, “This release is focused on intelligence and tool access.” The enhanced voice mode is currently being rolled out in beta to users on its desktop and mobile applications, as well as the web client.
Free account users will have certain limitations, including a single connection and the necessity for all prompts to be processed through Haiku. Regardless, they can still communicate with Claude using all supported languages.
