The US government has lifted its export ban on Anthropic’s Mythos 5 and Fable 5 AI models, allowing the company to restore access to the models for its customers. The ban had previously required Anthropic to suspend access for foreign nationals, even those working within the US.

In compliance with government directives, Anthropic temporarily blocked access to both AI models. The company announced on X that it would begin restoring access on July 1, following the approval from the Department of Commerce.

Recently, Anthropic received government authorization to redeploy Mythos 5 to US organizations involved in critical infrastructure defense. This rollout provided around 100 organizations access to Mythos 5, which is employed by Project Glasswing partners.

However, the situation regarding Fable, which is designed to make Mythos’ capabilities available to the public, was initially uncertain. According to the Financial Times, Commerce Department Secretary Howard Lutnick informed Anthropic that the ban on Fable had been lifted after the company agreed to actively identify and mitigate security risks associated with the AI models.

The restrictions on both Mythos and Fable were implemented following warnings from Amazon and other companies regarding vulnerabilities to jailbreaks and their potential misuse. Anthropic has previously defended its models, outlining safeguards established to prevent misuse during the access block announcement.
