Google announced Wear OS 7 at I/O 2026, highlighting a range of new features aimed at enhancing user experience. The update integrates Gemini Intelligence and introduces Wear Widgets, an evolution of existing informational tiles, designed to be more dynamic and customizable for developers.

Wear OS 7 carries over several design tweaks from Android 17 while adding interface elements that display glanceable information in innovative ways. Users can create specialized widgets using Google’s AI-powered Create My Widget tool, which can also be utilized on smartwatches.

Live Updates, the system providing real-time information for Android phones, will also be available on Wear OS. Additionally, the update includes a default workout tracker featuring built-in media controls, allowing users to manage various fitness apps seamlessly.

Wear OS 7 introduces controls that enable users to select which apps automatically trigger the media controls interface. A new Remote Output Switcher feature allows for easy switching between audio output devices, including headphones and speakers.

The update supports developers with several APIs to integrate their apps with Gemini Intelligence. This includes the AppFunctions API that lets apps function in tandem with Google’s assistant and the capability for task automation directly from a smartwatch.

Further details about Wear OS 7 are expected during I/O 2026. A test version is currently available via the Wear OS 7 Canary Emulator, with the full release anticipated later this year.
