Google announced multiple updates during The Android Show, ahead of its I/O 2026 conference, including a new laptop lineup called Googlebooks and the introduction of Gemini Intelligence, a generative AI suite. Googlebooks, marking the 15th anniversary of Chromebooks, will seamlessly integrate with Android phones, allowing users to access files directly from their devices. The laptops will be produced by Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, and are expected to be available this fall.
Gemini Intelligence offers various AI features aimed at enhancing productivity across Android and ChromeOS devices. It will assist users with tasks like creating shopping carts from grocery lists and managing reservations. The system includes a feature dubbed Magic Pointer that provides contextual suggestions based on cursor movements, reminiscent of earlier assistive tech like Clippy.
In addition to productivity features, Gemini Intelligence will support custom widget creation on Googlebooks and Wear OS. The AI will also enhance Autofill for form completion, utilizing information from connected applications. Users will have control over data sharing and feature activation, enabling a tailored experience.
Gemini Intelligence is set to debut across various platforms, starting with the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones this summer. The integration of Gemini into Chrome for Android will allow for research, content summarization, and web comparisons, with a rollout commencing at the end of June for select devices running Android 12 and above.
The new Android 17 operating system will introduce features like Noto 3D emoji and improvements to the speech-to-text function known as Rambler, which aims to reduce filler words. Another feature, Pause Point, will encourage intentional phone use by prompting a pause when attempting to access time-consuming apps.
Google also emphasized collaboration with Apple to streamline data transfer for new Android users, starting with Pixel and Samsung devices later this year. Quick Share will gain compatibility with Apple’s AirDrop, and users can now share information between Android and iOS devices via QR codes.
In a significant update for Instagram users, the app is now optimized for Android tablets, featuring ultra HDR video capture and built-in stabilization. AI-powered editing tools will enhance photo and video capabilities, enabling upscaling and audio track adjustments.
Google highlighted ongoing efforts to improve privacy and security within Android, reinforcing its commitment to protect user data through technologies like Private Compute Core. Enhanced security measures will also target suspicious app behaviors and spoofed calls, with initial partnerships with banks to verify the authenticity of financial institution calls.
Android Auto is undergoing a redesign that incorporates Gemini Intelligence, supporting custom widgets and streaming services like YouTube and Spotify while parked. Google Maps will introduce Immersive Navigation for enhanced driving assistance by utilizing vehicle cameras.
