Meta is testing a new AI chatbot for Threads that resembles the Grok feature on X, though the “early beta” is currently unavailable to most users. The testing period is restricted to select users in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Argentina, and Singapore, while the @meta.ai account remains publicly visible to all Threads users.
Users have expressed frustration over the inability to block the chatbot’s account, a feature available for other accounts on Threads. Many have reported the account for spam but found that the option to block it does not function as expected. The phrase “Users cannot block Meta AI” is trending on Threads, generating over a million posts discussing the issue.
Meta has stated that users can opt to see “fewer” posts from the bot using the mute feature or the “not interested” button to influence the app’s recommendations. Users also have the ability to hide replies to their own posts that mention the AI.
A similar controversy erupted on Bluesky when its Chief Innovation Officer Jay Graber announced an AI assistant, which quickly became one of the platform’s most blocked accounts. This incident highlights ongoing user grievances regarding AI features that cannot be opted out of. Previously, Meta faced criticism for AI-generated Instagram profiles, which prompted the company to label the blocking issue as a “bug” before discontinuing that project.
Meta has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the lack of blocking options for the Meta AI account.
