Samsung has released a significant software update for its Bespoke refrigerators, enhancing artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities concerning food recognition and meal planning. The update aims to improve the system’s ability to identify various food items and streamline grocery management for users.
Previously, the refrigerators could recognize around 60 fresh foods and about 50 packaged items, totaling over 100 identifiable foods. The update introduces support for Google’s Gemini technology, increasing the identifiable foods from over 100 to more than 2,000. Users will need to connect the refrigerator to Wi-Fi to utilize this feature, aligning with other smart functions it supports.
In addition to expanded food recognition, Samsung is enhancing voice control features. Users can now ask the fridge to check the water filter status or troubleshoot issues through voice commands. The company is introducing a new feature called Reliability AI, which monitors the fridge’s components for faults and can provide repair agents with detailed information if issues arise. For example, if ice cubes are clumping together, Reliability AI can allow agents to adjust settings remotely.
To assist users further, the updated software can differentiate between similar products, like Diet Coke and Coke Zero, and notify them of impending expiration dates. Additionally, the fridge can generate shopping list suggestions based on frequently removed items to streamline replenishment reminders and provide recipe suggestions based on existing ingredients.
Despite significant advancements, some limitations remain, including occasional mislabeling and inaccuracies in food recognition. For example, the AI misidentified a bandage as a vegetable. However, the overall increase in identifiable items has improved the functionality of the AI-powered features, even if occasional errors persist.
The update does not prominently feature the Google Gemini branding on the device, as Samsung’s Bixby remains the sole digital assistant for voice interaction. Overall, Samsung’s update marks substantial improvements in providing useful AI capabilities for grocery management, despite some ongoing challenges.
