Google launched new “switching tools” for its Gemini AI assistant aimed at facilitating the transfer of user data and chat histories from other chatbot platforms.

The new tools enable users to migrate personal information, referred to as “memories,” and complete chat logs into Gemini, a move designed to reduce the effort required for users to adopt Google’s AI.

Memory transfer involves Gemini suggesting a prompt for the user’s current chatbot. The resulting response can then be copied and pasted into Gemini, allowing the AI to integrate key user preferences and personal context.

Google stated that once memories are imported, Gemini will understand information such as user interests, family details, or upbringing, enabling it to function without extensive re-training.

For chat history migration, users can upload zip files containing exported chat logs from other platforms like ChatGPT and Claude. This feature allows users to continue conversations and search through past interactions within Gemini.

Alphabet’s Gemini reported over 750 million monthly active users last month during its fourth-quarter earnings call. OpenAI announced 900 million weekly active users for its ChatGPT platform previously.
