YouTube is rolling out picture-in-picture (PiP) functionality to free users globally. Previously, this feature was limited to free users in the U.S., while users in other regions needed a Premium or Premium Lite subscription to access it.

PiP allows users to continue watching videos in a small window while interacting with other applications. Users can activate PiP by swiping up or tapping the home button while a video is playing. Google noted that the feature is still rolling out and may not yet be available to everyone.

The PiP feature will be accessible on both iPhone and Android devices. Premium Lite and Premium subscribers already had access to PiP globally. Premium members can also use PiP for music content, a feature exclusive to their subscription level.

This expansion of PiP to non-paying users represents a significant enhancement for the platform. Observers anticipate the possibility of additional features, such as background play, being made available to free users in the future.

Google’s decision to broaden PiP access is seen as a strategic move to enhance user experience and may influence subscription decisions among users considering a Premium upgrade.
