OpenAI has officially launched ChatGPT Images 2.0, enhancing its AI image generation capabilities significantly, following the release of GPT-Image-1.5 in December 2025. The new model, which has been in testing on LM Arena AI, can generate detailed images with long text blocks, realistic user interfaces, and even recreate real-life figures, including Sam Altman.

This update represents a substantial advancement in how OpenAI approaches visual media. ChatGPT Images 2.0 can create floor plans, image grids, character models, and apply features to user-uploaded images, indicating a shift from viewing images merely as decoration to understanding them as a form of language.

OpenAI did not provide benchmark comparisons for the new model, but it claims performance aligns with “state-of-the-art” capabilities, especially when contrasted with Google’s recently released Nano Banana 2 model, which also features text integration in images. Reports suggest that ChatGPT Images 2.0 may outperform it in fidelity and user interface reproductions.

As part of its commitment to safety, OpenAI will incorporate metadata tagging in AI-generated images, responding to increasing concerns over the potential misuse of AI technology in political contexts. In a recent briefing, Adele Li, OpenAI’s Product Lead, emphasized the company’s proactive measures to prevent political interference through advanced safety protocols.

The updated model incorporates “O-series” reasoning capabilities, which allows it to research and consider layouts before generating images, enhancing its ability to create coherent visual storytelling assets. Demonstrations showed the model could synthesize complex documents and accurately reproduce maps, marking a leap in functionality over previous iterations.

Images 2.0 features have been structured to support high-fidelity typography and multilingual text generation, addressing long-standing issues in AI-generated imagery. This iteration can produce coherent text across non-Latin scripts, providing enhanced accessibility for worldwide users.

OpenAI has outlined a clear tiered access system for the rollout. Free users will have standard access to the base model, while Plus and Pro users gain access to advanced features, including AI-assisted reasoning and the ability to generate multiple images maintaining continuity from a single prompt.

The pricing structure for API developers has decreased compared to the previous model. Image generation costs $8.00 per input and $30.00 per output, while text generation costs $5.00 for inputs and $10.00 for outputs. The shift to ChatGPT Images 2.0 indicates OpenAI’s approach is geared towards enterprise adoption, allowing for more complex creative tasks that can facilitate higher productivity.

In response to growing competition and technological advancements, OpenAI remains focused on enhancing user safety and satisfaction while delivering state-of-the-art AI tools. As the functionality of ChatGPT Images 2.0 evolves, the company aims to bridge the intent gap in AI art creation, ensuring that it meets both user needs and ethical standards.
