OpenAI has announced the discontinuation of its ChatGPT Atlas browser, redirecting its focus towards a new desktop app that incorporates a built-in browser alongside agentic capabilities. Atlas, launched in October 2025, will cease operation on August 9, 2026, as part of a broader effort to streamline user experience and integrate various functionalities into a single application.

The transition was detailed in an announcement from OpenAI, which stated, “We’ll begin sunsetting the standalone Atlas browser, and will share information with users about how to transition to ChatGPT.” The integration aims to enhance existing AI workflows without requiring users to switch between multiple apps.

In April, Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser emphasized a shift away from “side quests and fragmented interfaces,” hinting at the potential for a ‘superapp’. While the new ChatGPT desktop app has not been officially branded as such, its design and features suggest it may fulfill that role.

Along with the new application, OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Work, an extension that enhances agentic capabilities, catering primarily to knowledge workers who need more than simple prompts for task completion. ChatGPT Work allows users to handle longer tasks, operating both on local systems and the cloud, ensuring continuity regardless of the primary device’s status.

To further support its user base, OpenAI plans to release additional tools via Chrome extensions, ensuring continued access to AI services within a dedicated browser environment.
