Sony is developing an R-rated animated film adaptation of the popular video game Bloodborne, according to Variety. The adaptation aims to remain faithful to the game’s graphic and violent elements.
The film was announced during a presentation by the Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group at CinemaCon. The division’s president stated that the adaptation will be “very true” to the original game’s nature, which features heavy blood splatters and body horror, similar to the gameplay experience found in Dark Souls.
Bloodborne, created by Japanese studio FromSoftware and published by Sony in 2015, has received critical acclaim as a role-playing game. Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Bloodborne, cited HP Lovecraft as a primary inspiration for the game’s themes and aesthetics.
In February, Bloomberg reported that Bluepoint Games sought to remake Bloodborne for modern consoles, but was blocked by FromSoftware. Miyazaki expressed a desire to oversee the remake personally, stating he “doesn’t want anyone else to touch it,” despite being too occupied with other projects.
The upcoming animated film will be co-produced by PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation, and Seán McLoughlin, who is known as the gaming YouTuber jacksepticeye. Production is still in its early stages, and no target release date has been set for the film adaptation.
