Amazon is merging with satellite internet provider Globalstar Inc. to enhance its satellite network, Leo, which competes with Starlink.
The merger aims to expand Leo’s capabilities and support direct-to-device services for compatible iPhone and Apple Watch models. Amazon did not mention that Apple owns a 20 percent stake in Globalstar, purchased for $1.5 billion in 2024. The agreement allows Leo to provide satellite services for supported Apple devices, with collaborations planned for future satellite offerings as Leo’s network evolves.
Amazon’s direct-to-device service is scheduled to launch in 2028. The merger is expected to finalize by 2027, pending approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Amazon is required to deploy 1,600 satellites in orbit by July 2026. However, the company currently anticipates having around 700 satellites operational by that date.
