Google is testing a feature called “Projects” in its Gemini conversational AI, allowing users to organize chats similarly to folders in OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This feature aims to enhance user experience by helping manage multiple conversations, especially for users who engage with the AI for various tasks.

The Projects feature has been under development since December and has begun appearing for select users, although it is not currently functional. Initial sightings of the feature were made by users, including a screenshot shared by @BartokGabi17 on X, highlighting the “Add to project” option in Gemini’s web interface.

When users hover over specific chats, a three-dot button opens a menu offering several options—“Share Conversation,” “Pin,” “Rename,” “Delete,” and the new “Add to project.” Selecting the “Add to project” option prompts a pop-up to choose from existing projects, but the absence of a feature to create new projects indicates the functionality is still incomplete.

Another user account on X, TestingCatalog News, confirmed the feature’s visibility but noted that it might be appearing inadvertently. There are currently no official updates regarding the broader rollout of the Projects feature.

Code references from last month suggest that the Projects feature may eventually be renamed to “Notebooks,” aligning with Google’s ongoing developments in its NotebookLM project. As some users gain access to Projects, further expansion of this functionality is anticipated.
