Anthropic has launched the “Claude for Open Source Program,” providing eligible open-source software maintainers and contributors with six months of free access to its highest-tier subscription, Claude Max 20x. This initiative marks a significant step toward supporting developers who contribute to the open-source ecosystem, often without sufficient recognition or access to advanced AI tools.

The program aims to assist maintainers by offering a subscription that allows higher usage limits designed for intensive tasks like heavy coding and documentation writing. The rollout is capped at 10,000 approved recipients, although there is potential for Anthropic to adjust that limit. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted by June 30, 2026.

Eligibility for the program is divided into two tracks. The Maintainer Track requires individuals to be primary maintainers or core team members of a public GitHub repository with at least 5,000 stars or one million monthly NPM downloads. Applicants must demonstrate active engagement with the repository in the three months prior to application.

The Ecosystem Impact Track accommodates projects that do not meet the aforementioned thresholds but are deemed important within the broader open-source landscape. Applicants under this track must submit a 500-word explanation of their project’s ecosystem significance.

General eligibility criteria stipulate that applicants must be at least 18 years old, legal residents of countries where Claude.ai is available, and have a GitHub account in good standing. Duplicate applications will not be considered, and the subscription is non-transferable, meant for individual use only. Existing paid subscriptions will be paused during the benefit period.

Key terms include that Anthropic reserves the right to publicly identify recipients and that all application decisions are final. The program aims to remedy historical underrepresentation of open-source software maintainers in the AI tooling industry.

Anthropic’s initiative contrasts with existing offerings in the market, like GitHub Copilot’s OSS program. It aims to provide substantial value with access to premium features, recognizing the essential role of open-source maintainers in technology development.
