Josh Wardle has released a new daily game called Parseword, following the success of his viral hit Wordle.

The new title relies on the mechanics of cryptic crossword clues. Parseword asks players to replace words with synonyms, reverse them, find homophones, remove letters, or combine words to solve puzzles. The game includes a tutorial and a hint system to assist users. Wardle told The New Yorker that he was inspired after hearing The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin discuss cryptics on a podcast. He collaborated on the project with former Reddit colleagues Chris Dary and Matt Lee. The game uses clues from cryptic constructors Emily Cox and Henry Rathvon.

Parseword is considered less approachable than Wordle and is viewed as having less mass appeal. It is described as a game geared toward New Yorker readers.

Wordle became popular for its simplicity and shareability before The New York Times acquired it for a seven-figure sum. Other daily games looking to replicate Wordle’s success include Connections, Strands, and Pips.
