WhatsApp is developing a new Incognito Mode for conversations with its Meta AI chatbot, according to a report from feature tracker WABetaInfo. The privacy-focused functionality was discovered in development within the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.28.1. This feature is designed to offer users increased confidentiality during their interactions with the artificial intelligence tool. While it is currently under development and not yet accessible to beta testers, it is expected to be released in a future update for the instant messaging application.
The primary function of the Incognito Mode is to allow users to engage with the Meta AI chatbot privately. When activated, the application will not record the history of user queries, a direct contrast to its current operation. Presently, the app can record data from conversations with Meta AI for future reference. With the new mode enabled, Meta AI will be prevented from using any conversation data for its own training or for personalizing the user experience. This mechanism is intended to provide users with greater control over their personal data while maintaining privacy.
This feature also includes a mechanism for automatic data deletion. If a user exits a chat window while Incognito Mode is active, the queries they have entered are automatically deleted from the device. The report notes this allows individuals to ask questions or research “sensitive topics” without concerns about their data being stored or misused. The functionality is said to be similar in concept to the Private Browsing mode on Apple’s Safari and the Incognito Mode available on Google Chrome, which both provide temporary, non-recorded sessions.
Regarding the user interface, the option to activate the mode will reportedly appear in the options window where users can currently initiate a new conversation or view previous chats. Upon enabling Incognito Mode, the application will display a prompt to the user. This prompt serves as a notification, stating that “no personalisation, no history, and no memory” will be available for subsequent conversations with the Meta AI chatbot while the mode is active.
