An APK teardown of Google Play Services app version 26.32.31 beta has revealed upcoming enhancements to Android’s data backup capabilities. The analysis suggests Google is developing a new feature that will allow users to select additional folders for online backup, addressing current limitations where not all user data, such as encrypted app data, is automatically saved.
Currently, Android’s automatic online backup primarily covers photos, videos, settings, and some user data, leaving folders like “Downloads” excluded. The beta code indicates Google is working on enabling the backup of such previously unsupported directories, which would significantly expand the scope of data preservation.
All backed-up data will be uploaded to the user’s Google Drive. Furthermore, a string referencing “documents” within the code hints at potential restrictions on file types, suggesting that Google might allow backups only for specific categories of files rather than all content within selected folders. While details remain speculative, the findings confirm that Google is actively developing these new backup options to provide users with more comprehensive data protection.
