OpenAI’s ChatGPT is projected to reach 700 million weekly active users this week, marking continued rapid growth for the AI chatbot. This milestone follows the app’s achievement of 500 million weekly active users by the end of March, as stated by Nick Turley, OpenAI VP and head of ChatGPT’s app, on X. Turley also highlighted that the app’s user base has expanded fourfold since last year.
The app’s popularity received a significant boost in March with the introduction of an enhanced image-generation feature, powered by the GPT-4 model. OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap reported in early April that over 130 million users had generated more than 700 million images within days of this feature’s launch.
ChatGPT has also seen a substantial increase in its subscriber base, with Lightcap confirming last week that the service now has 5 million paying business users, up from 3 million in June. According to a recent report from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, users engage with ChatGPT for an average of over 12 days per month, trailing only Google and X. The report further indicated that in the first half of 2025, users spent an average of 16 minutes daily on the application.
