OpenAI CEO Sam Altman detailed GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 plans on X on February 13, 2025, outlining a roadmap to simplify ChatGPT offerings and unify AI models.

In a roadmap published on X, Altman outlined plans for the upcoming GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 models. He noted that OpenAI’s current product lineup has become complicated, prompting the company to streamline its offerings.
Altman stated, “We hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence,” emphasizing the need to eliminate the current requirement for users to select between multiple AI models for different tasks.
The company plans to ship GPT-4.5, internally referred to as Orion. According to Altman, GPT-4.5 will be OpenAI’s “last non-chain-of-thought model.” The Verge reported details about Orion last year, providing additional context for the internal nomenclature.
Following the release of GPT-4.5, Altman explained that a top goal is to unify the o-series models with the GPT-series models. He explained that the unified system will be designed to use all available OpenAI tools, determine when extended reasoning is necessary, and serve a very wide range of tasks.
Altman further indicated that, with both ChatGPT and OpenAI’s API, GPT-5 will be released as an integrated system that brings together much of OpenAI’s technology, including o3. He confirmed that, when GPT-5 launches, OpenAI will no longer ship o3 as a standalone model.
OpenAI first teased the o3 model in December, and the company launched o3-mini in January. These developments are part of the broader strategy to consolidate various AI models into a single, more capable system.
Altman provided a vague release timeline for GPT-4.5 and GPT-5, indicating that they could be available in “weeks / months.” No specific dates were mentioned, leaving the timeline open to further updates as development progresses.
In terms of user access, Altman detailed that when GPT-5 becomes available, free ChatGPT users will receive “unlimited chat access” at “the standard intelligence setting.”
He explained that Plus subscribers will have the opportunity to use GPT-5 at “a higher level of intelligence,” while Pro subscribers will receive access at “an even higher level of intelligence.” These tiered settings are designed to differentiate user experiences based on subscription levels.
At present, users must manually select between different OpenAI models, such as GPT-4o for everyday tasks or o3-mini for specialized problem-solving. This requirement has been a source of complexity for many users.
According to Altman, the new unified system will allow ChatGPT to automatically determine which model is best suited for a given prompt. This approach is expected to simplify user interaction by eliminating the need for manual model selection.
Altman reiterated the company’s commitment to simplifying the product lineup when he stated, “We want AI to ‘just work’ for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten. We hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence.”
He further clarified that GPT-4.5, the successor to GPT-4o, will be the final ChatGPT model to launch as a standalone offering. This decision marks a shift towards a unified model system that integrates all of OpenAI’s technologies.
With the launch of GPT-5, OpenAI intends to integrate a substantial portion of its technological assets, including o3, into one system. As a result, o3 will no longer be available separately, reinforcing the move towards consolidation.
