Telegram has introduced its first update of the year, featuring new account verification methods, message search filters, and functionality to convert gifts into NFTs as of January 2025.

Telegram’s 2025 update: New verification methods and NFT gifts

Telegram previously verified public figures and organizations on its platform and has now allowed already-verified third-party authorities, such as food quality regulators and educational consortiums, to verify accounts. Accounts that receive third-party verification will display a new logo instead of the typical blue checkmark.

According to a blog post from Telegram, “This decentralized platform for additional verification will help prevent scams and reduce misinformation — with a unique proactive solution that sets a new safety standard for social platforms.”

Those wanting to be authenticated must first undergo a verification process and complete an application to be eligible for the verified mark. Entities can use Telegram’s Bot API to assign or remove verification, similar to verification processes on other social media platforms. Verified affiliated accounts will show the organization’s logo on their profiles.

Telegram has implemented a feature that allows users to convert gifts into NFTs, which include custom backgrounds and icons. Users can send gifts by spending Telegram Stars, which can be purchased through the app or via the Fragment site using a TON crypto wallet.

Telegram stated that users would be able to trade these NFTs on various platforms. There is a fee for upgrading gifts to collectibles to cover blockchain transaction costs. The gifts that can be upgraded include more than 20 existing items and are designed by Telegram artists with unique attributes and variations.

Additionally, Telegram has added emoji reactions for service messages, enabling users to respond when others join a group or send a gift. New search filters for private chats, group chats, and channels make it easier for users to locate specific messages within their conversations.

Telegram also introduced customizable chat folders that now support custom emoji, enhancing users’ organizational capabilities.

In 2024, Telegram achieved profitability by implementing sustainable monetization features, including Premium subscriptions, privacy-conscious ads, and Telegram Stars. The company’s growth strategy focuses on prioritizing user experience and privacy while remaining independent.

Telegram confirmed the launch of various updates while addressing delays caused by Apple’s review team.
