In a major recall, Honda said that 1.7 million cars and SUVs are being recalled in the U.S. because a steering problem could lead to more crashes. An estimated 1.7 million vehicles, including the popular Honda Civic, CR-V, and HR-V, as well as Acura Integra from 2022 through 2025 with a Takata airbag inflator, are involved in the recall.

The problem is a failure in the steering gearbox. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also reports that the flaw is an improperly produced worm wheel. This defect creates excessive internal friction, which leads to a “sticky” feeling when turning the steering wheel.

Honda recalls around 1.7 million vehicles

This problem could result in increased steering effort, making it more difficult for drivers to manage their vehicles — particularly in emergencies. A month after the probe was opened, Honda began receiving complaints about the issue and started alerting owners in September 2021.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

Most recalled vehicles were built between 2022 and 2025, and the recall involves a broad swath of Honda and Acura models. Some of the affected vehicles include:

What’s the fix?

Honda has found the solution to this problem. It will be replaced with a defective worm gear spring and treated with grease to lessen internal friction. Honda will send recall notifications to vehicle owners by November 18, 2024, and will repair free of charge.
