As we eagerly anticipate a slew of new Apple products hitting the market this year, one device that’s been conspicuously absent from the rumors is the iMac. Fortunately, Bloomberg’s esteemed tech journalist, Mark Gurman, has provided some juicy details about what we can expect from the next iteration of the popular all-in-one computer.

In his Power On newsletter, Gurman shared some inside information on the iMac’s design, processor, size, colors, and even a possible launch date. According to Gurman, the most frequent question he’s asked each week is “when is a new iMac coming out?” – a testament to the enduring popularity of this Apple device.

Apple is developing new iMac

Gurman’s latest report on the new iMac is good news indeed, as he confirms that the next generation of the all-in-one desktop computer is well underway. The two new models, known internally as J433 and J434, are reportedly in an advanced stage of engineering validation testing (EVT).

This means that Apple is already running production tests on the new iMacs, which suggests that the launch date may be just around the corner. Apple fans who have been eagerly anticipating the new iMac can now breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the company is making good progress on this highly anticipated device.

Colorful iMacs to be released in 2023

Earlier reports suggested that Apple was focusing solely on a 24-inch version of the next iMac, and Gurman’s latest revelations seem to confirm this. According to his sources, the 24-inch model will be the only size available for the upcoming iMac release.

However, fans of the device will be pleased to know that the new iMac is set to come in the same range of colors as the current M1 iMac. This includes the ever-popular shades of silver, blue, pink, and orange, which have proven to be a hit with Apple customers.

Although there’s no specific mention of yellow, green, or purple in the report, it’s entirely possible that Apple will bring these colors back as well. Overall, the news of the new iMac’s size and color options is likely to generate a lot of excitement among Apple enthusiasts.

New iMacs will run on M3 chip

As for the processing power of the new iMacs, Gurman confirms that they will indeed come equipped with an updated Apple Silicon M-Series chip. While he stops short of naming the chip outright, he has previously reported that Apple is working on an M3 chip, and an independent source at 9to5Mac has corroborated this claim.

Gurman also reiterates his expectation that the new iMac will be “one of the company’s first M3-based machines.”

Apple typically unveils its latest chips at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), so we could get a first glimpse of the M3 chip at this year’s event, which is expected to take place in June. With the new iMac set to launch shortly after, Apple fans are likely to be eagerly anticipating the device’s impressive processing power and performance.

When is the release date of new iMacs?

According to Gurman’s report, although the new iMacs are well into their development phase, they are not expected to go into mass production for at least three months. As a result, the earliest possible launch date for the updated device is sometime in the second half of 2023.

While this may be disappointing news for those eagerly anticipating the new iMac, it’s still reassuring to know that it’s on the horizon. Gurman hopes that the launch won’t be pushed back further into 2024.

In addition to the iMac details, Gurman also provided some additional insight in his Power On newsletter, including updates on the upcoming 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air releases and when we can expect the M3 chip to come to the iPad Pro.
