Sonic the Hedgehog announces a new 3D animation series for Netflix, by the creators of Ben 10 and to be broadcast in 2022. What can we expect from the series?
Sonic the Hedgehog has caught the cameras’ eye: After starring in a blockbuster film (one of the few “healthy” releases that premiered in 2020), it is launching on Netflix, with a new 3D animation series.
The streaming giant has just announced it, although without giving any more details… beyond the fact that it will be released in 2022. It will be produced by Man of Action Entertainment, the company behind the Ben 10 franchise and recent animated series such as Power Players, Big Hero 6, and Mega Man Fully Charged.

This is, of course, not the first time that Sega’s hedgehog has appeared on television in an animated format: It had three series in the 90s, and more recently an adaptation of Sonic Boom. Although it started with two disastrous games for Wii U and 3DS, the animated series was quite successful, and lasted until 2017 with 104 episodes (although with a very childish style).
Will it be different this time? Knowing the trajectory of Netflix, and looking at series like Jurassic World Cretaceous Camp, it is feasible to expect a slightly different format. Perhaps we will see a more compact series (fewer chapters more worked) that aims at a wider audience than series like Sonic Boom, distributed in children’s hours and channels like Cartoon Network.
It should be noted that Netflix is venturing big in the TV adaptations of video games, with the Cuphead animation series, a Resident Evil real image series, and even an anime in the world of Cyberpunk (in collaboration with CD Projekt RED).
On the other hand, the success of Sonic’s film in the real image has already led to the preparation of the sequel, whose release date is set for April 2022.
