Apple has pushed back the debut of its smart glasses as teams working on the device weigh privacy concerns, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported.
The glasses were initially scheduled to debut in 2026, but Apple is now expected to unveil the product at WWDC in 2027 and release it by the end of that year.
Teams developing the glasses within Apple’s Vision hardware group and elsewhere in the company view privacy as their top priority.
Apple is developing new hardware and software privacy features for the glasses that are not available on its current products.
The company may adopt protections similar to those used by Meta, including disabling recording if the system detects possible tampering with the recording indicator light.
Apple is also considering less capable versions of the glasses.
One option would exclude a camera entirely. Another would include a full camera system but prevent users from taking photos or recording videos.
The privacy debate around smart glasses has drawn added attention after Meta’s AI glasses were recently named in a class-action lawsuit.
