Apple Maps will serve as the official navigation system for Ford’s next generation of electric vehicles (EVs). This integration into the Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform is enabled by Apple’s new MapKit for Automotive SDK, enhancing functionality across future models.
Ford indicated that the partnership with Apple aims to deliver user-friendly navigation directly on vehicle displays. The UEV platform will feature capabilities including natural language directions, real-time traffic updates, accident information, and multiple routing options.
Additionally, Ford plans to utilize road-level data from Apple Maps to improve its BlueCruise hands-free driving system. The collaboration marks Apple’s inaugural role in technology supporting self-driving features.
Ford is set to launch a range of affordable EVs, beginning with a midsize pickup truck priced around $30,000, expected in 2027. The company has not provided details on subsequent vehicles beyond this initial model.
A promotional film from Ford showcased various future vehicle types, including SUVs and sedans, amplifying the company’s commitment to diverse offerings. Ford aims for its EVs to be cheaper than a three-year-old used Tesla Model Y, responding to the significant demand for more budget-friendly electric vehicle options.
There is notable interest in an upcoming proposed $25,000 EV pickup that lacks certain features like paint, a stereo, or power windows, reflecting the market’s appetite for lower-cost electric vehicles.
