Meta has filed a patent for an AI-powered wearable device designed to continuously monitor users’ emotional states by analyzing their voice, surroundings, and daily habits. The patent, filed in December 2025 and published on July 2, 2026 (US 2026/0182881 A1), describes a system that could log moments of “sighs, laughter, and/or the tone(s) of a voice(s)” at specific intervals, combining audio data with location information, contextual objects, and medication schedules.

The company states the system aims to enhance the precision of emotional analysis by synchronizing data from multiple sensors. It includes a machine learning model that interprets verbal and nonverbal cues from recorded audio, relating mood indicators to various contextual elements such as time of day and user activity.

The patent also details a mechanism for generating periodic reports summarizing emotional trends, citing specific audio instances as evidence. The filing notes that the training data could include “attributes of thousands of objects,” such as books and personal messages.

While Meta positions the technology as a fitness coaching advancement, privacy concerns arise due to the requirement for constant audio recording without a wake word. Critics highlight that the device could record interactions with others, thus extending existing concerns surrounding non-consensual recording practices evident in Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses.

The patent references Meta’s controversial 2012 “emotional contagion” study, where the company manipulated the news feeds of 700,000 Facebook users without their consent to assess mood influence. Tracy Clayton, a spokesperson for Meta, stated that “patents at Meta are often filed to disclose concepts that may or may not be implemented,” asserting that a patent does not ensure the company’s pursuit of the technology.
