The Messages app for iPhone provides features for group texting, including the ability to enable group chats with both iMessage and non-iMessage users. While group messaging is automatically enabled in Apple’s iMessage service, you may need to adjust your settings to include non-iMessage users through MMS or RCS messaging.

Before you start: Ensure you have the latest iOS version for optimal features and confirm your cellular plan supports MMS and RCS messaging.

Warning: Enabling MMS or RCS messaging may incur additional charges per your cellular plan.

How to enable group messaging on your iPhone

Follow these steps to enable group messaging, adjust settings for RCS, and create group texts on your iPhone.

Enabling MMS Messaging

  • Tap the Settings app on your Home screen.
  • Scroll down and tap Apps.
  • Tap Messages in the Apps menu.
  • Tap the MMS Messaging slider under the TEXT MESSAGING header. If this option is missing, your carrier may not support MMS.
  • If your iPhone is running iOS 16 or earlier, after enabling MMS, toggle the Group Messaging option to enable it.

Enabling RCS Messaging

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Scroll to the bottom and tap Apps.
  • Open Messages from the Apps list.
  • If you are using iOS 18 or later, check for the RCS Messaging option under the TEXT MESSAGING header. If it’s not visible, your carrier may not support RCS.

Creating a Group Text

  • Open the Messages app.
  • Tap the + to add contacts from your address book or enter a contact’s name, phone number, or Apple ID.
  • Type your message in the text field or tap the + to attach images, stickers, audio, and more.
  • Tap the button to send your message. Messages in iMessage are indicated by blue bubbles, while MMS messages are green.
  • Edit the group:
    • To add more contacts, open the group chat, tap the group name or icon, then tap the number of members in the group. Select + Add Contact to include others.
    • To name the group chat, tap the group icon, select Change Name and Photo, enter a name, and choose an icon option, then tap Done.

Pro tip: To leave a group chat, tap the group photo and select “leave group.” This helps reduce notifications without deleting the conversation entirely.

Once you enable group messaging, you can easily communicate with large groups of friends or family members. Utilizing RCS can further enhance your messaging experience with features like read receipts and typing indicators. Stay connected and manage your group chats effectively to enjoy seamless communication with everyone.
