Are you trying to find files saved to your iPhone? Downloaded files—such as documents, PDFs, large images, and more—will usually go to the Files app on your iPhone unless you designated a different location. Additionally, saved pictures can usually be found in the Photos app, and music can be found in the Music app. Regardless of the file type, this wikiHow will show you how to find and access all files downloaded on your iPhone.
Before you start: Make sure your iPhone is updated with the latest iOS version.
How to locate files saved on your iPhone
Follow these steps to access various types of downloaded files on your iPhone.
- Open the Files app. It’s the blue-and-white folder icon on your home screen and/or in the Productivity & Finance section of the App Library.
- Tap Browse at the bottom-right corner. You can skip this step if you’re already on a screen that says “Browse” at the top.
- Tap On My iPhone. It’s under the “Locations” header at the top.
- Look for your downloaded files in the main On My iPhone folder. You may see an iCloud Drive folder in this section as well.
- Tap the Downloads folder. This is typically where you’ll find downloaded files, such as PDFs, documents, audio files, and images not saved to your Photos app.
Finding saved photos
- Open the Photos app. This looks like a multi-colored flower.
- Tap Library. This is the tab at the bottom-left corner.
- Tap All Photos. This will be to the right of Days. You may already be on this tab.
- View your photos. Recently saved photos will be at the very bottom, while older saved photos will be at the top.
- If you don’t see your saved photos, they’ll most likely be in the Files app in the Downloads folder.
Locating downloaded music
- Open the Music app. This looks like a white musical note with a red background.
- Tap Library. It’s the icon of three overlapping squares with a music note at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Downloaded. This displays another list of categories.
- Tap a category to view downloaded music. For example, if you want to view your downloads by artist, tap Artists.
Accessing installed apps
- Swipe left across the home screen to the App Library.
- Tap the App Library search bar at the top. This displays a list of every app that’s installed on your iPhone.
- Type an app’s name to search for it if you know the name.
Checking iPhone storage
- Open the Settings app. This is the grey gear icon on the home screen and/or in the App Library.
- Tap General. It’s in the third group of settings.
- Tap iPhone Storage. It’s about halfway down the page.
- At the top, you should see a chart with your iPhone’s usage based on category.
- Browse the recommendations (optional). You may see some recommendations for saving space on your iPhone, such as enabling iCloud Photos.
- Tap an app to view its storage information. This shows how much space the app is consuming.
Pro tip: Regularly check and organize your files to keep your iPhone running smoothly and efficiently.
To effectively manage your files, regularly review what you’ve downloaded on your iPhone. It’s easy to accumulate unwanted documents and images over time, which can clutter your storage. Monitoring your storage can help you gain insight into the apps and files using the most space.
Understanding where your files are stored not only aids in organization but also enhances your overall productivity. By employing tools like iCloud and strategically using the Files app, you can support a smoother experience with your device while enjoying access to all your important documents and images whenever needed.
