Anthropic has more than doubled its estimate for developer spending on Claude Code tokens, raising the average cost to $13 per active day from an earlier estimate of $6.
The updated estimate indicates that 90% of users will now spend less than $30 per active day, a significant increase from the previous cap of $12. This adjustment reflects rising demand for artificial intelligence services and highlights the growing financial implications for users and developers.
According to the Claude Code documentation, the new average monthly cost for developers is now estimated between $150 and $250. This represents a critical shift in how costs are projected for enterprise deployments, which have been rising rapidly in response to increased engagement with AI technologies.
Ed Zitron, CEO of EZPR, highlighted the change on X, noting that the estimates for daily spending had dramatically increased. Archived versions of the documentation show that prior to April 16, the estimates indicated spending of $6 with a daily cap of $12. Zitron commented on the implications of this change, stating, “Anthropic stealth-tweaked their claude code docs to increase the estimated average that a developer would spend a day from $6 to $13.”
The rise in token costs has broader implications for a range of stakeholders, including users, developers, and companies. The increasing costs stem from urgent demands for compute capabilities in the AI sector, which have put significant pressure on providers like Anthropic.
Last week, user discontent emerged when it appeared that Claude Code was not available for Pro users on Anthropic’s pricing page. The company later clarified that they were testing an access change impacting only 2% of new users. Amol Avasare, Anthropic’s head of growth, acknowledged that engagement levels had significantly increased and that the subscription plans had not been designed for this level of usage.
Avasare noted, “We’ve made small adjustments along the way (weekly caps, tighter limits at peak), but usage has changed a lot and our current plans weren’t built for this.” The changes in pricing and access indicate a strategic adjustment by Anthropic as it navigates the complexities of increasing demand for their AI offerings.
